Government. Thus in the course of a single night the problem

was completely solved. When Borodin saw me later, it was

clear that the outcome had surprised him, but I spoke soft

words to him, "You are a disciple of Marx and will appreciate that your criticism of the position was made from an imper-

fect apprehension of its various elements. It is not that

we are cleverer than you are, but that you being a foreigner,

do not understand the situation."

There was another incident which will show you

what sort of man Borodin is. We disposed of Yeung (Hi Man)

and Lau (Chan Wan) after our Expedition to the East River.

When the East River Expedition was being planned, Borodin

was in Peking, and did not take part. This once resolved upon, we gave the task to our Kuomintang army, with the

Cantonese troops in reserve We owed our success in a great

degree to the energy of Comrade Chan Ming Shu who sits among

us to-day. The true strength of our troops was only one

tenth of that of our enemies, but in practice we were able

to defeat the armies of Chan Kwing Ming one after another in the same manner as we have now defeated Wu Pei-fu and Sun

Chuen-fong. We overcame Ip Kui, Hung Shiu Lun and Lam Fu in detail. Yeung Hi Man was attached to Lam Fu, and Lau Chan Wan had allied himself with the North and sympathised

with Tong Kai Iu. On the defeat of Lam Fu, Yeung and Lau rose in conjunction with the intention of seizing Canton causing disturbance at our base, changing the flags at our Headquarters and destroying the East River Expeditionary Force. I knew that we were on the edge of a crisis, and and that they must be dealt with without a moments delay. I had a discussion with Comrade Liu Chung Hoi and we made up our minds. Comrade Liu then proceeded to Chiu Chau and came to a complete understanding with Comrade Tseung (Kai Shek) and Hui (Shung Chi). When all arrangements had been

made
